Conversational pricing policy for WhatsApp Business Accounts, explained.

There has been a lot of hubbub and confusion around the policy, so let’s demystify this. 

Meta will from Feb 1, 2022, start charging businesses, for customer originated conversations also, as against the earlier structure of charging only for template or business originated conversations. 

We will try and simplify this, in simple language for everybody. 

Freebies 

  • First 1,000 conversations per month are free. 
  • These conversations could be a combination of customer originated conversations and business originated conversations. 
  • These conversations are at the business WhatsApp Business Account level. 
  • If a business has more than one phone number associated with a WhatsApp Business Account, they will cumulatively get the first 1,000 conversations per month, free. 
  • If a business has multiple WhatsApp Business Accounts, each Account will get 1,000 conversations, per month, free. 

Click-to-WhatsApp - A new category of messages, unveiled 

  • With ads that originate from Facebook and Instagram, you can add a Send Message button that will open a conversation thread in the WhatsApp Business app. This allows customers to connect with your business on WhatsApp after clicking the button on your ad. 
  • These Click to WhatsApp conversations are FREE 
  • These Click to WhatsApp conversations will not be counted towards your free 1,000 customer originated messages 
  • These Click-to-WhatsApp conversations are not applicable to ads served on other platforms and those will be treated as customer originated conversations 
  • These Click-to-WhatsApp conversations are not applicable for click through from the Facebook or Instagram pages of the business 

Customer originated conversations, defined 

  • A customer originated conversation starts when a business replies to the customer and this session stays active for 24 hours from the time of the businesses, first reply. 
  • There are no constraints on number of messages exchanged 
  • There are no constraints on number of template messages sent to customers, as they will be part of the customer originated session 
  • If a business does not respond to a customer originated conversation, the conversation has not commenced and is not billed (of course, it’s bad for your business) 

Business originated Conversations, redefined structure 

  • Business originated conversations (earlier templates) were structured, such that each template was charged for 
  • In the new policy, once a business conversation has commenced, a 24 hour window opens up, within which all conversations, including multiple template messages, will be treated as part of the same business originated conversation

Whatsapp Promotion

WhatsApp Business API. Promotions permitted

WhatsApp is rapidly scaling up to becoming a commercial behemoth, by capitalizing its significantly large user base. But more of that in another post.

Meta has now allowed enterprises using the WhatsApp Business API, to send out promotional messages (aka templates, in WhatsApp parlance) and have started approving them. You now have a free pass to reach out to your customers, outside the Session / Conversation timeframes, with promotional messages.

There is no new category of template message introduced, to facilitate this, so you can use any of the existing categories, to start your customer conversations. Meta is actively supporting and approving promotional messages, as they liberalize the WhatsApp Business API and timeframes have come down to minutes.

However, this comes with a caveat – Meta, will be very closely monitoring the recipient responses to your templates. Too many recipients responding with a Block or Report will immediately see a reaction from Meta, to either throttle the template broadcast in case you had initiated a bulk broadcast or even block the template itself. In extreme cases, Meta can block your Business Account itself which will then undergo scrutiny.

Our reasoned proposition to all our platform users as well as anybody who is using the WhatsApp Business API and is planning to use it for promotions is – when you are undertaking promotions, send out a broadcast to a small user base. Evaluate their responses and then expand the recipient coverage in a stepped manner, to minimize any WhatsApp reaction risks.

WhatsApp Business. Catalogs, Communication and Commerce

WhatsApp introduced Catalogs in single device platforms in 2021 and has now planned to release the same over the WhatsApp Business API.

Let’s explore how you as an enterprise can capitalize on this.

Building Catalogs

Catalogs for WhatsApp Business API users can be built in multiple ways. We are listing them below, in an order of ease of execution.

  1. If your business already has a Facebook catalog set up, we suggest that you leverage that catalog for WhatsApp commerce use cases, as it’s the quickest way to commence operations
  2. If your business already has and manages its own Facebook catalog, you can give permission to your Vendor to connect your catalog. Once the permissions are granted, your vendor can link the WhatsApp Business Account to the Catalog via the WhatsApp Manager.
  3. If your business is building this for the first time and want to explore all possibilities, your business can also create this in the Facebook Commerce Manager.
  4. If your business has an elaborate eCommerce engine and you want all the flexibility of managing the items displayed from your eCommerce system, you need to get down to integrating your eCommerce platform with the WhatsApp Business API.

Sharing Catalogs with WhatsApp Users

I will skip the details on how to manage a single product catalog and focus on the multi-product catalog, as that’s how business will best leverage the platform. Catalogs can be categorized, and products can be placed in categories, to make the user search easier.

The above is a quick short, proposed flow for a grocery store, which you can replicate for your business. The in-picture guidelines, detail the characteristics of how this can be executed.

A caveat – in the current release, your catalog can only have 30 items and that limitation is driven by the current menu structure of the WhatsApp Business API, which has this limitation. That, however, does not mean you cannot show more products. Innovate, as you go. Or talk to us

Shopping Cart and Checkout

A customer can simply add products to his shopping cart, decide quantity, sub-category (weight, size, color with impact on price) and then proceed to checkout. The checkout process will be fed to your eCommerce / ERP using our platform.

A caveat – in the current release, the shopping cart is not fungible across multiple devices that your customer may be using. Not a very strong use case, but nevertheless, something for your call center agents, who get fervent calls saying that my shopping cart is missing.

Converse, Collect and Complete

Continue the user engagement to collect further collect information on shipping address, shipping location map, confirm delivery date and time, collect money (in countries with WhatsApp pay, you can pay using the WhatsApp pay. However, nothing stops you from sending a payment link for the customer to pay), send notification of dispatch and successful delivery completion.
